Plastic co-extrusion is a manufacturing process that combines different materials from multiple extruders into a single co-extruded profile. At Mavis, we specialize in plastic coextrusion of plastic, leveraging years of expertise to deliver advanced solutions tailored to diverse industrial needs.

The Plastic Co-extrusion Process

Our plastic co-extrusion process involves two or more extruders that converge at the same die, enabling the production of a single profile made from multiple, tightly bonded plastic materials. This allows simultaneous extrusion of different materials to create profiles with unique properties.

The die used for shaping the co-extruded profile is custom-designed to accommodate various materials, ensuring seamless bonding even for polymers with different melting points and viscosities. During extrusion, precise pressure is applied at the material junctions to create a unified composite profile.

The resulting co-extruded plastic profile combines the diverse characteristics of each material used, forming a product with enhanced functionality. The co-extrusion process is completed with downstream equipment, similar to standard plastic profile extrusion.

Applications Coextrusion of Plastics

Coextrusion of plastic offers versatile solutions for numerous industries. Examples include:

  • Bi-color co-extruded roller shutters: External UV-protected color matched to catalog specifications, with white interiors to brighten rooms.
  • Co-extruded shower door seals: Rigid PVC U-profiles for glass attachment paired with flexible fins for water-tight sealing.
  • Recycled and virgin material co-extrusion: Internal layers of recycled material combined with external virgin layers for UV resistance and durability.
  • LED covers: Transparent polycarbonate covers for light transmission with thermoplastic elastomer fins for dust and water resistance (IP-rated).
  • Aluminum film-coated profiles: Aesthetic plastic profiles with aluminum film for a metallic finish.

Advantages of Coextruded Plastic Profiles

Coextruded profiles offer numerous advantages, including:

  • Enhanced profile efficiency.
  • Reduced assembly time.
  • Superior functional quality.
  • High-value finished products.
  • Extensive customization options.
  • Greater design freedom for innovative applications.
