Coextrusion is a manufacturing process that combines multiple materials from different extruders through a single die to produce a unified coextruded plastic profile. At Mavis, we specialize in this technique, leveraging our extensive experience to deliver high-quality, customized solutions.

The coextrusion process for plastic profiles

Our coextrusion process involves using two or more extruders that feed different materials into a common die, resulting in a single profile composed of multiple, securely bonded plastics. This method allows for the simultaneous extrusion of diverse materials.

To achieve the desired geometric shape, the die must be specifically designed to accommodate and merge the various materials. It must also handle polymers with significantly different melting temperatures and viscosities. During extrusion, the process generates the appropriate pressure at the bonding points of the different materials, forming a unique composite extrudate.

The resulting coextruded plastic profile benefits from the distinct properties of each plastic used, functioning as a single, cohesive product. The downstream process continues similarly to standard plastic profile extrusion.

Applications of coextruded plastic profiles

Consider seals for window frames, which consist of a rigid foot that fits into an aluminum frame and a soft bulb that aids in thermal and acoustic insulation. The coextrusion process enables the combination of rigid and flexible materials, as well as different colors or polymers with varying chemical and mechanical properties.

This technology allows for the fusion of numerous plastics, provided their chemical compatibility is maintained. Through coextrusion, we’ve successfully integrated not only thermoplastics but also metals like aluminum and copper, as well as fibers, fabrics, and other materials.

Advantages of coextruded profiles

Combining two or more materials with distinct characteristics into a single plastic extrudate offers several advantages for those requiring technical coextrusions, including:

  • Enhanced efficiency of the coextruded profile.
  • Reduced assembly time.
  • High functional quality of the coextruded profile.
  • Finished product with high added value.
  • Extensive customization of the plastic coextrusion.
  • Greater design flexibility.
